Champions League Final Match Report

23 May 2007

MILAN 2 (Inzaghi 45, Inzaghi 82)
LIVERPOOL 1 (Kuyt 89)

The omens were good for Milan. Liverpool have never won a match officiating by Herbert Fandel while Milan had won all five. Michel Platini is indeed a great, great man.

Milan had the lion’s share of the possession early on but were misplacing passes left right and centre and hitting too many longballs. Jankulovski, who has been the teams best defender this season, took a heavy touch on a Seedorf pass, Pennant closed him down and Kuyt rolled a perfectly weighted pass into his feet and from a tight angle he forced Dida to save and Nesta hacked clear before Kuyt could get a chance on the rebound. Ambrosini and Nesta failed to clear a Zenden header, the ball found it’s way back to the midfielder but he sliced horribly wide, Xabi Alonso latched onto Maldini’s clearance but dragged his shot wide of a post. Pennant dispossessed Jankulovski a second time, Gerrard took over and turned Maldini, who equalled Paco Gento’s record of 8 European Cup final performances, brilliantly before passing to Kuyt but his shot was charged down by a combination of Nesta and Oddo. Crucially despite their chances Liverpool failed to work Dida and paid the price on half-time. Kaka’ made the most of minimal contact from Xabi Alonso, preferred in the centre to Gerrard who the supposed tactical genius Rafael Benitez decided to employ in the hole, to win a free kick on the edge of the D. Pirlo fired the ball through a huge gap in the Liverpool wall and as Inzaghi broke from the pack the ball struck his ARM before bouncing past a wrong footed Reina.

Gerrard went down in the box under a poor challenge by Nesta but this time there was no Spanish referee. On the hour mark he should have equalised. He ran onto an atrocious pass from Gattuso and got a lucky break off Nesta’s heels as he ran into the box, he opened up his body to shoot into the bottom right corner as Dida covered his near post but scuffed the ball and the giant Brazil gathered at the second attempt. A sloppy pass out of defence from Pirlo found it’s way to the Liverpool captain off the back of Fandel and from about 30 yards he fizzed the ball past the left post. Inzaghi made up for poor control after the Liverpool defence left him unmarked in the centre of the box on a counter attack by scoring his second goal of the game and 58th in European competition overall, finishing off the only attack of quality in the match. Kaka’ gave Pennant, who was marginal in the second half having been superb in the first, a taste of his own medicine by stealing a ball off him and spreading wide to Oddo, Oddo decided against taking on Riise and passed the ball back to the Brazilian, he played a one-two with Ambrosini and ran forward unopposed before threading a pass into Inzaghi who raced clear as the Liverpool defence appealed in vain for offside, Reina flew off his line but Inzaghi kept his composure and shot from a bad angle wide right on goal as the ‘keeper dived at his feet and the ball tricked towards the bottom left corner of the net. Both teams made substitutions on a 89th minute corner, Benitez making the bizarre decision to bring on Arbeloa for Finnan while Gilardino replaced two goal hero Inzaghi. Kuyt, standing in an offside position, re-directed Agger’s deflected header past Dida to give Liverpool a glimmer of hope. Kaka’ tried to run down the clock near a corner flag but only succeeding in giving the ball away. In the 92nd minute of injury time Ancelotti made his last substitution, bringing on Favalli for Seedorf. Benitez kept looking at his watch as the seconds ticked down but this time there would be no injury enforced substitutions or a mental collapse as Handel blew for full time.

Milan picked a hell of a night to give one of their poorest performances of the season. Liverpool didn’t exactly set Athens alight with their football, which is hardly a surprise, but created considerably more chances, even if they failed to work Dida. Gerrard claimed Liverpool would be back for another final. Under Benitez I think that’s highly unlikely. They can only draw Chelsea in semi-finals so often.

Milan started the season with an eight point penalty in the league and owed their participation in the tournament to the fact that Empoli weren’t registered to play in European Competition. They said Italian football was in crisis. They said we were too old. They said we were too slow. We are CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE. Years from now people will look back at this and ask which is the bigger miracle? Jesus rising from the dead or Milan winning the European Cup in 2007? The latter isn’t disputed.

SEMPRE MILAN.

Serie A Round 37 - Match Reports

20 May 2007

ATALANTA 1 (Pinto 10)
INTER 1 (Figo 49)

Pinto turned inside Burdisso onto a through ball and shot past Julio Cesar as he advanced off his line. Figo scored his FIRST goal of the season from the penalty spot. He’s aged about five years over the past 12 months and it’s definitely time for him to leave.

Attendance : 15,000
Assists : Tissone, Gonzalez

CAGLIARI 3 (Suazo 13, Marchini 39, Marchini 68)
ROMA 2 (Totti 29 Pen, Totti 86)

Biondini’s extravagant flick sent Suazo in on goal and despite losing his balance he recovered to scramble the ball into an empty net. Totti equalised from the spot after Biondini handled a free kick. Marchini split the Roma defence with a pass to Pepe who drew out Curci before pulling the ball back for Marchini to fire in from 10 yards. The midfielder scored a fantastic second and again Biondini, who must have been watching videos of Van Basten and Bergkamp, provided an outrageous assist, flicking a first time cross from the left up to the edge of the box where Marchini was waiting with a glorious right foot volley. Roma’s giant 19 year old midfielder Faty intercepted a hospital pass on the edge of the Cagliari area and flicked the ball over a defender before volleying a cross to the back post for his captain to sweep home his 24th goal of the season.

According to rumours in the Italian press Suazo’s transfer to Inter will be confirmed shortly after the end of the championship which probably means Adriano’s days are numbered. If he’s actually bothered about winning the European Golden Boot Totti (48 points) should have no problem getting the brace he needs against relegated Messina to overtake Alfonso Alves (51 points) at the top of the standings. Van Nistelrooy is also in the running.

EMPOLI 3 (Vannucchi 9, Moro 22, Saudati 23)
REGGINA 3 (Vigiani 52, Amoruso 56, Amoruso 84 Pen)

Vannucchi gave Empoli the lead with a brilliant shot from 30 yards which flew in off the crossbar. Moro repeated the trick with a fierce low drive which embarrassed Campagnolo at his near post. Vannucchi, who I feel is a strong candidate for Serie A player of the season alongside Totti (obviously) released Busce on the right of the box and he arced a peach of a pass to the back post for Saudati to slide in goal #3. Reggina began a Liverpool style comeback when he headed in Tedesco’s corner. Four minutes later he met Moro’s fabulous cross with a low diving header. Amoruso converted a twice taken penalty to keep Reggina’s survival hopes alive. Results went Empoli’s way which meant they qualified for the UEFA Cup despite blowing a three goal lead.

Empoli are fairly average and I don’t think any of the players have UEFA Cup experience which is probably why they don’t run the risk of too much upheaval over the summer.

MESSINA 2 (Rigano 81, Rigano 88 Pen)
FIORENTINA 2 (Pazzini 25 Pen, Gamberini 58)

With Toni injured and expected to leave, Pazzini is now first choice striker at the club and scored his sixth goal of the season from the penalty spot. He should triple that tally next season. Five minutes later Rigano blew a chance to equalise from the penalty spot. Paoletti feebly slapped out Jorgensen’s close range volley and Gamberini poked in Fiorentina’s second. Rigano took advantage of some staggeringly poor defending to head in a corner and successfully converted a penalty awarded for handball, his 17th goal of the season in just 26 games.

Rigano is old and slow but brilliant in the air and good link man. He would be perfect for any mid ranking team in the Premiership.

PALERMO 2 (Corini 26, Caracciolo 45)
SIENA 1 (Maccarone 94)

Guidolin was back on the Palermo bench three weeks after being sacked and guided his team to their first win in eight games and into next year’s UEFA Cup. Corini gave them the lead with a brilliant free kick and on he stroke of half time Caracciolo beat Manninger all ends up with a violent strike from 25 yards. Maccarone scored a late, late consolation and it was another fine long range strike, this time from a free kick.

MILAN 2 (Gourcuff 36, Costacurta 57 Pen)
UDINESE 3 (Asamoah 10, Di Natale 53, Barreto 61)

Storari went AWOL on a corner leaving Asamoah to head into an empty net. Gourcuff scrambled in the equaliser, his first Serie A goal, after the returning Boriello fell over Oliveira’s cross. Di Natale restored Udinese’s lead with a tap-in after Storari failed to hold from Portsmouth bound Muntari. The ref dreamed up a penalty for the home side and in his last ever game for the club Costacurta scored from the spot, his second league goal of the decade. Barreto raced onto a long ball over the top of the Milan defence and just managed to keep it in play before beating Storari at his near post.

Serie A Round 37 - Headlines

Cagliari take a big step towards safety with a 3-2 win over Italian Cup holders Roma. Reggina do a Liverpool and comeback from 0-3 down to grab at point at Empoli, who will join Palemo, 2-1 winners over Siena, and Fiorentina, who draw at Messina, in next season’s UEFA Cup. Catania loss at Sampdoria makes them the most likely candidates for relegation along with Reggina and Siena.
